Small wins are part of my history.
As a child, I was a first-generation immigrant twice. First from Iran to Japan and later to Canada. When my family immigrated to Canada, I was 13 and didn’t speak English at all.
But my father was a professor and my mother was an early childhood educator—so they took education seriously. They baked determination into me that helped me master the process of learning. One new word at a time. One math equation at a time. One small win at a time.
“Ganbatte,” my mother would say, a Japanese phrase of encouragement that means stick with it.
I remember when my ninth-grade homeroom teacher (hey, Mr. Bowen!), came up to my desk with my report card in his hands. He said I was the top female student in grade nine. Only one boy had scored higher by one percent.
A decade later, I graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science from the University of BC. From there, I worked full-time as a chemist in the pharmaceutical and biotech sector in Vancouver.
While I loved research, there was something missing. I had a lifelong dream to educate and help others achieve.
One day, a friend asked me to tutor her brother who was failing Math 10. Within a few months of my tutoring, he went from a failed mark to 90%.
I was hooked. I had truly found my calling.
Before I knew it, referrals flooded in. I tutored for 7 years before bringing on a team.
What started as a one-woman show has grown into a tight-knit community of incredibly talented tutors.
