Tip for tutors: Using inquiry-based learning approach in tutoring 5/5 (2)

For decades now teachers and educational system throughout the world are working towards the betterment of the current educational system. Extensive research has been conducted in order to find better and improved ways of teaching and educating children.  This development is not done at a national level, but almost every country in the world is joining hands in order to improve the future educational system. This extensive research has led to perhaps one of the most effective teaching system so far: the inquiry-based learning approach.
A large number of tutors have quickly understood the success of this approach and thus they have started to implement it already. In order to make the inquiry-based learning approach effective and efficient; we have listed some really good tips for the teachers.
Planning the lecture
Yes, the key is to go with the flow, but that does not mean that you should allow your students to de-track you. As a tutor, it is your responsibility and job to make sure that the results are going in the right direction. If you do not plan your lecture before time, there is a high possibility that during the lecture you are bound to get distracted. Allow students to ask questions, but be sure to reframe those questions in accord with your topic and then ask them again. This will encourage students to ask question according to that particular topic.
Pause and change course when needed
When a child is allowed to question whatever comes in his/her mind, he or she is bound to come up with questions that are not relevant to the topic at hand. It is the tutor’s job to ensure that they students are always on the right track. When they ask questions that are not relevant, the teacher should take a pause and change the course of the discussion. He/she can do that by simply asking questions of his/her own.
Involving students in the inquiry classroom
In order to engage all the students in the classroom, it is important that you provide each and everyone equal opportunity to contribute. To do that you can start by dividing your students into two small groups. Assign task and time to each group and allow them to compete with each other. This will encourage every student in the group to put in more effort in order to win. It also challenges students to test their abilities.
Don’t tell facts, on the contrary, let them learn
A famous adage “Tell me and I will forget, show me and I will remember, involve me and I will understand” is the perfect depiction of the inquiry-based classrooms. Instead of simply telling the students fact, it is imperative that you allow them to probe on their own. If you go about telling facts, they are bound to get bored and distracted. However, if you allow them to come up with their own conclusion, they will pay heed to whatever is going on in the classroom.

Tutoring Students with Dyscalculia 5/5 (1)

Dyscalculia is a common specific learning disabilities that mainly affects the arithmetic skills. It’s characterized by impairment in learning basic arithmetic facts, processing numbers and performing calculations. There’s no official information about the prevalence of this disability, but experts suggest it might affect around 5-15% of students in USA.
If you’re a parent or a tutor of a child, diagnosed with dyscalculia, you need to understand that this disability requires a different educational approach. It’s essential to turn the learning process into a positive and rewarding experience, either by allowing extra time during assignments or tests, or by giving the child their own set of work to complete. One tip that’s been shown to enhance the learning process of children with dyscalculia is providing written, instead of verbal instructions, as it reduces the cognitive load, associated with having to memorize a task.
A child, diagnosed with dyscalculia might not be able to catch up on their own and might require extra help or tutoring. MyGradeBooster in Vancouver can provide adequate tutoring, support and parental guidance, when it comes to coping with dyscalculia. As a parent, it’s important to provide your child with lots of practice, when it comes to new skills and concepts. Try to make the learning process as active and engaging as possible and ask a lot of questions to keep the child occupied and focused on the task. Research suggests that a large number of children with dyscalculia also suffer from ADHD, so keeping them attentive and engaged is essential.
As a tutor, understanding how dyscalculia works is the first step towards utilizing more effective learning techniques. Avoid memory overload and assign manageable amounts of work. Build retention by reviewing the information every few days and allow your students to use their other senses, sight and hearing in particular. Finally, when dealing with a child with dyscalculia, always try to match your strategy to their particular needs and abilities and help them devise a personal approach to learning based on their unique strengths.

Tutoring Students with ADHD 5/5 (1)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is defined as a group of behavioral symptoms that include short attention span, distractibility, impulsivity and over activity. The cluster of symptoms usually also impairs the learning process and is more common amongst children, already diagnosed with a learning disability.
When it comes to enhancing the learning of children with ADHD, it’s essential to understand that helping is about empowering, rather than controlling them. Parents of children with ADHD are generally advised on simplifying their instructions to a basic set of one or two, and then building upon them. Teachers, on the other hand, can be asked to break down assignments into steps in order to help the child remain focused on the task. These strategies are already employed in a number of schools in Vancouver, but even with them, many ADHD children still require extra assistance.
One of the main problems students with this learning disability suffer from is inability to organize and manage their time adequately. Parents can help them learn how to plan ahead and avoid procrastination, as well as provide support, when it comes to completing homework and assignments on time. Teaching them self-monitoring strategies is a long-term solution that will help them become more aware of themselves and also greatly enhance the learning process. However, when teaching an ADHD student – whether in a formal school setting or at home – it’s vital not to lose your patience. Use a soft voice and address the child by their name to get their attention. Give simple and concrete instructions and make clear that you won’t repeat yourself. Add some structure in the daily routine by scheduling tutoring sessions at particular times of the day and alternate physical and mental activities. When you notice that the child’s attention is starting to wander, use a simple question in a soft tone to re-involve them in the task.
As with many other disabilities that impair learning, it’s important to understand how ADHD affects the learning process of your child and devise effective strategies that incorporate the student’s strength, without putting too much stress. You can also consult with a specialist and consider working with  MyGradeBooster’s Vancouver tutors to get the extra support your child needs in order to reach their full potential.

How to tutor students with Dyslexia 5/5 (1)

Dyslexia is one of the most common learning disabilities, affecting around 1 out of every 10-20 people in the UK. As a “specific” learning disabilities, it affects only some of the abilities, necessary for learning, such as reading or writing.
When it comes to education, it’s a common misbelief that children with dyslexia might never reach their full potential or catch up with their peers. Of course, there’s no quick fix for dyslexia and it might take up to 3 years to get your child to read and spell at grade level, but specific learning techniques and efficient tutoring can greatly improve and enhance the learning process.
The key to effective learning, when it comes to dyslexic children, is creating and discovering an individual learning style. Multi-sensory structured language (MSL) approach has been identified as an especially successful method of improving the learning process of dyslexic children. By incorporating a variety of techniques, it encourages students to utilize all of their senses and help them develop a personal learning style that works best for them. Dyslexic students might think in a qualitatively different way than we do: they would tend to spell whole words and think in whole chapters and stories, so their education should reflect this focus on the “wholes”. As a parent or a tutor of a dyslexic child, it’s extremely important to understand how the child thinks and help him devise a strategy that incorporates his strengths.
When working with a dyslexic child, it’s important to stick to your routine. Try to complete the lesson, but set yourself a sensible time limit. Scheduling can greatly enhance the learning process, as it helps dyslexic children know what to expect and what’s coming next. Organize your lessons around a particular conclusion or a fact, as dyslexic children tend to utilize what’s known as a top-down processing: focusing on the whole and working their way backwards to the details.
When it comes to learning, it’s vital to understand that dyslexic people tend to think differently, so they require a fundamentally different approach to education. In Vancouver, there are a number of institutions that can provide you with information and guidance, when it comes to learning about dyslexia and supporting children, diagnosed with it. Understanding the basic mechanisms behind this learning disability is the first step towards devising an effective technique that will enhance and improve the learning process.

Helping Students Overcome Forgetting 5/5 (1)

“I forgot.”
“I think my teacher talked about it, but I don’t remember.”

As tutors we hear this many times. Students forget a lot of what they have learned.  Most of the material teachers cover does not even stay in the student’s memory until the midterm or even the end of chapter test. Students forget up to 60 percent of what they learn just an hour after learning it. How can we transfer their knowledge into their long term memory?

For many courses, especially those that a re cumulative in nature, like math and sciences, forgetting old content makes it difficult for tutors and the student to move forward onto new skills. For example, students need to be comfortable with the multiplication table before they can tackle more complex number operations.

The best method to ensure understanding of material is to practice it repeatedly until it becomes second nature. This means doing as many practice questions as possible from the textbook, not just the ones assigned by the teacher. It means to write down a word over and over again until the student learns it’s correct spelling. Most kids do not practice what they learn long enough to really learn the material. They try to get their homework done as soon as possible so they can move onto other things, not taking the time necessary to understand every concept they learned.

Many kids want to get the information fast and move on, not realizing that learning does not take place by rushing to get homework done or by reading their math notes for their quiz. True learning occurs when they take the time to direct what was taught in class, looking at it from different angles and tackling different types of questions. Although it will take more study time, but once information is transferred to their long term memory it is there to stay!

Study Strategies for Secondary School Students 5/5 (1)

Unfortunately, many students have never been taught how to study. For this reason, even those students who are motivated struggle with doing well in their core subjects, such as math and sciences. For those students who are interested in pursuing a university degree in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields, it is imperative to learn the techniques to productive studying.

When we initially speak to our students and ask them how they study, many say that they read their notes the night before a test or a quiz to make sure they know the material. This is the worst way of preparing for a test day. Merely re-reading notes and expecting to remember everything is ineffective. Memorization, understanding concepts adequately enough so that the brain transfers the material into our long-term memory requires many hours of rehearsals, self quizzing, sample problem solving and reviewing the material. Yet, many students truly believe that they are putting in a good effort and expect good results just by looking over the material once or twice before their test date.  This strategy will only work if the student has been routinely working with and reviewing the material as the concepts were taught. Studying for a test is similar to learning the piano or other musical instruments. It requires practice time, repetition, and making mistakes and learning from them, in order to become fluent in the material.

So how should students be studying? Routine and distributed studying, that is, studying over many days, is much better than cramming. Depending on the size of the assessment, secondary school students should plan their study schedule so that they are practicing the tested material 1-2 hours everyday, 5-7 days prior to the actual test date. During their study, students must be actively engaged with the information they are learning. Some examples of active studying include, reading the material out-loud and repeating it to oneself, writing down important concepts and going over them regularly, summarizing the content into graphs and diagrams, and solving sample questions to apply what they learned to new situations. Students must keep their attention and focus solely on the test preparation and not allow themselves to get distracted.

Once the student feels comfortable with their learning, it is time to self-test. Self-testing is the only way the student will know if they truly understood the material and where they still need improvement. Self testing also allows students to put themselves in the teachers’ seat, which allows them to come up with and practice potential test questions that will appear on their test.

What is the goal of tutoring? 5/5 (1)

The goal of tutoring is not to replace independent homework time for students. The goal of tutoring is to give students the skills and confidence they need to tackle unfamiliar questions and find their own correct answers. When hiring a tutor, the goal should be to develop a strategic plan, so as the student reaches grade 12, the hours of tutorials are gradually decreased without impacting the student’s marks. When this has been achieved, we can say tutoring was successful. By the end of their grade 12 year, students who wish to continue into university must have the skills to study independently, organize their time wisely and stay focused on tasks; otherwise, they will have a hard time adapting to the demanding coursework that comes with earning a university degree.

Too many students are dependent on their tutors and tutoring lessons just to complete the given homework. It is important for parents to work as a team with their tutor to ensure their child is doing independent work at home. Some students get into the habit of taking weekends off. Their weekend starts Friday until the end of the day on Sunday, and no work or study gets done for 3 days of the week! It is definitely OK for students to take Friday evenings off to relax from their busy weeks, but Saturday and Sundays are a great time to catch up with homework and do a little review of the material covered.

The best use of tutoring time is when the student comes prepared with their questions because they have already spent the time to recognize their trouble spots. Tutors can then help the student with specific questions and move on to either getting the student ahead of class or review the previous material to ensure complete understanding.

With this system of tutoring, a child would only need to see their tutor once a week and still perform extremely well in school. Once the student sees the initial improvement from tutorials and consistently scores above their grade goal, the move towards lessening their tutoring hours can be implemented. This move must take place slowly to allow the tutor and the student to become accustomed to the change without impacting the student’s grades. We have found that it is harder to improve a student’s performance the second time around if the student experiences a big drop.

When is tutoring and hiring a tutor a waste of parents’ money? 5/5 (1)

When is tutoring and hiring a tutor a waste of parents’ money?

Hiring a good tutor/mentor is money well spent. A good mentor will not only help children with their struggling subjects, but often inspire students and have a significant impact on their academic careers. Spending money on tutoring is wasteful only when the child sees no improvement in their grades or confidence, or worse, when the child’s confidence drops even lower after working with a tutor. When this happens, both parents and children may generalize their disappointing experience and lose confidence in tutors and tutoring altogether. They scratch the idea of having a tutor, and the child continues to struggle and dislike school, not reaching their full potential and not knowing that school does not have to be so hard.

Here are a few suggestions to consider when hiring a tutor to ensure your child gets the maximum value for their efforts.

If your child is struggling, asking the tutor for once-a-week lessons will not cut it.

Children struggle due to unresolved knowledge gaps that have piled up over the years. It is important to recognize that tutors need time to work with the child to eliminate the knowledge gaps so the child is caught up with his/her class. Hiring a tutor to work with your child just once a week is not enough when a child has been struggling. At MyGradeBooster, we recommend the following tutorial hours to our customers as we have seen results within 1-3 months with the following tutoring schedules:

1.5 hours / week for students who are within 5% of their grade goals
3.0 hours / week for students who are within 25% of their grade goals

Parents are encouraged to hire tutorials only if they are ready to commit to the tutorial time needed to see improvement. Without giving the tutor and your child the sufficient time they need together, even the best tutor will not be able to accomplish much, and you would have wasted your money.

Not all tutors can teach, and not all teachers can tutor

Hiring a tutor is the most important step as with the right tutor you will be able to see significant results within only 1-3 months of tutoring. The tutor does not need to be a school teacher, although school teachers can be good tutors. Students, especially those interested in pursuing non-teaching careers, can benefit immensely from working with tutors who are already in their field of interest. If you are using Craigslist or other tutor-classified ads, it is important to perform thorough interviews to ensure that they are good. How will you know you have hired a good tutor? Listen in and also ask your child after the first lesson to see what (s)he thought about the tutor. Trust your intuition as most times you will have a correct assessment of the tutor after just one lesson. Finding a good tutor is challenging and requires patience. At MyGradeBooster, we typically hire only 10% of the candidates that apply to tutor, so be prepared to go through a few before you find the right one for your child.

Don’t let the price tag fool you

Don’t get too excited if a tutor charges $15/hr, and don’t get too discouraged if another charges $60/hr. Good tutors often ask for what they are worth, but they will take less time to give results. However, not all expensive tutors are good, and not all cheap tutors save you money. You will have to determine their skills during the first lesson to determine how the value the tutor brings to you compares with the price tag. If your tutor who charges $60/hr can give your child significant results within 1-3 months, they have not only eliminated a big stress for you and your family, they have also given your child the hope and confidence they need to continue their achievement, which tends to spill over into other areas of their lives. As a rule of thumb, if the tutor you have hired (no matter the price tag), is unable to show any results after 3 months of tutoring, it is time to let them go.

Do not overload your child

Some kids are overloaded with extracurricular activities. They are so tired all the time that they are unable to focus during the lessons. If the child is doing well in school, then being involved in extracurricular activities is not a problem. However, if they are struggling, their academic needs must be prioritized, especially if you are spending the money to engage a tutor. Consistent poor performance in school can potentially lead children to convince themselves that they are not good enough and give up trying altogether. With the right planning and strategic tutoring, children can perform well in school and follow their extracurricular activities.

Be involved in your child’s education

Improving a child’s academic performance is achieved through teamwork. The team members include you, your child, their tutor, school teachers and the company director (if you have hired a company). If all team members work together, the child will start seeing initial results as early as 2-4 weeks after the beginning of tutorials. Teamwork does not mean micro-managing and helicopter parenting. All team members must feel comfortable and have the creative flexibility in doing their part. Once you have hired an amazing tutor for your child, trust that they will do their job well, and refrain from asking for too much extra work that takes up the tutor’s personal time. A brief written or oral progress report after each lesson is a great way to keep track of your child’s progress.
